I got my converter box from the internet at www.compupartsandmore.com for $21.99 + the govt coupon, with free shipping. I get more channels with a better picture quality than before. It is not as good as a real digital tv, but a lot better than what I had before for only $21.99. Some stations have 3 or 4 additional channel with the digital system.

Thank you, Owen, for sharing your personal experience.

I have been afraid this would be the case with the initial converters, that they would be like those first satellite boxes.

One can only hope that in the second half of this year more capable products come to the market. My personal recommendation is to wait with purchasing a converter box.

I can add in the meantime that I am very impressed with DTV.

At a family member's place, I hooked up a value HDTV screen to an old existing large over the air antenna; and it found more stations and than the older TV set and every channel reportedly available for that area. So, before buying a new antenna, try it with the existing antenna.

Add that for some channels it found 3 digital channels (listed as 10-1 10-2 10-3). They had crystal clear 720p HD quality. I was literally blown away and jealous that the image looked better than what we had in the past via Adelphia / Time Warner HD Cable. And, I am not easily impressed. A few times we did notice digitization (JPG pixelation) in the signal, which I think was due to weather and distance from the tower (60+ miles).

Unfortunately where I reside at the moment, I'm in a very low signal area, so I can't go OTA, just yet. When we can, we will go OTA :)

Lots of good information here. I have purchased one converter box already from Best Buy ($59.95) and am using. I am receiving clear pictures from stations that used to be fuzzy and also picking up substations that I did not know exist.
The only problem so far is trying to run a DVD or VCR. There are no instructions for hooking up other devices and a call to the tech service got me to Argentina where I had to repeat question two or three times. I was told that it would only work the TV and was not designed for anything else. This has completely done away with picture in picture and being able to record one station while watching another. All devices must be set to channel 3 or 4 (in my case 3) and and change stations for watching or recording on the converter box. I have blocked 11 stations that were in spanish.
Does anyone know an answer to this problem.

I found an excellent site; it had all the info about the Digital Transition and requesting the $40 coupon. I ordered my 2 coupons from it. http://www.digitalconverterbox.org
